Felt Hearts Tutorial

One of my goals this year is to use up my stash. My craft stash! I have a whole bunch of supplies that are just sitting there crying out to be made into something pretty. And I can’t ignore them any longer! So while digging through some of the goodies I have placed in perfectly appropriate locations all over the house, I found a BUNCH of felt. With Valentine’s Day coming up, it was obvious what I had to do. Start cutting out some hearts! And by some, I mean a lot.
Felt Hearts Tutorial and Matching Gift Tag Printable
My little one is a hoarder {you know what they say about the apple and the tree} and loves carrying as many things as possible at one time. So I’m putting these in a cute little basket so she can carry them around easily. She also enjoys throwing. Argh. So I’m sure she’ll love tossing these around.

I think these would also be fun for older kids if you made enough for a game of tic-tac-toe! You could put some taped lines on the table or floor and let them have at it! You might try filling them with beans or rice too. Lots of fun ways to use these!
Felt Hearts Tutorial and Matching Gift Tag Printable

You will need:

  • Felt
  • Sewing machine and/or needle and thread
  • Fiberfill stuffing
  • Scissors
  • Pinking shears {optional}
  • Fabric marker
  • Heart template {I used a cookie cutter}

1. Start by cutting two squares of felt large enough to fit your heart shape. Trace a heart onto one square. Sandwich the two squares together and cut your heart-shape out. You now have enough hearts to make one felt heart! Now repeat. Until you've gone crazy and finally have the total number of hearts you want.

2. Place two hearts together {right-sides-out} and sew around the inside of the heart, leaving a big enough hole to push stuffing through. I aimed to leave about an inch open, but most of the time it was probably closer to a 1/2”. Oopsie. It still worked though, it just took a little more time. Also leave a big enough seam allowance to trim the edges later. At least a 1/4”.

3. Stuff your heart with fiberfill. The less you fill it, the easier it is to sew shut! At least for me because I cheat and use my sewing machine.

4. Sew the opening closed. I’m not great with the hand sewing, so I used my machine.

5. Trim the outside edges with pinking shears. If you want. I think it's prettier, but that might be because I can't cut well and my sewing is a little wild. So it hides that better.

And done!

I also put together some printable gift tags for this project! I’m tying one to her basket. They have cute little felt hearts to match! You can download them here.Felt Hearts Tutorial and Matching Gift Tag PrintableSuch a quick and easy project for the little ones! And I may or may not enjoy playing with them too.

I’m so excited to give my kiddo a basket of LOOOOVE this Valentine’s Day! What special things will you be doing?

A Very Easy Sock Monster

**Update** It has come to my attention that there is already a pattern available for these. I am all about promoting Etsy shops {and don't want to step on any toes}, so I've removed the tutorial, but you can still make one by purchasing these Sock Hopper instructions. AND! You can now receive 15% off of anything in the MonsterTakeouts shop! Just enter coupon code: HUBBYMADEME15

We went with a girly monster theme for my daughter’s first birthday earlier this year, and ended up making a bunch of these little guys for party favors. They turned out so cute that I ended up wanting to keep them all to myself! They are very inexpensive, fast, and easy to make. So when I saw these cute Halloween socks in the Dollar Spot at Target, I knew my daughter was getting a set of Halloween sock monsters. The only problem is, one sock already vanished. Luckily she doesn’t know that I had planned to give her a smaller one too. Phew.
DIY Sock MonsterYou can make a bunch of these pretty quickly, especially if you make your husband stuff them. It only takes a bit longer if you decide you don’t like his stuffing job and have to redo them. And, it’s a great way to use up some of those socks that are missing their other half. Just make sure to use clean socks, no one wants to play with a stinky monster! ::wink::DIY Sock MonsterCan you believe “M” would not put this thing down? Well except to lay on it like it’s a neck pillow. I figured she would take one look at it and hand it to the dog, thinking it was a chew toy {smaller socks look less like chew toys}. Instead, she carried it around like a football all day while periodically stopping to give it cuddles and kisses. It’s also fun to play catch with sometimes.DIY Sock MonsterOh, and it fits perfectly in her cup holder. Now it can sit and watch her eat or ride with her in the car. And if you’re not yet convinced you need to make one… It’s also fun to throw at your husband when he’s not looking.DIY Sock MonsterToo cute, right? Just wait until you make one with a smaller sock. It's even cuter!

Make one! Your kids {or dog} will thank you. And show me pictures! I would LOVE to see your creations!

Team USA Headband and Hair Clips

Are you enjoying the Olympics as much as I am? Summer is my favorite! And while my little one is too young to get excited about the Olympics, she’s not too young to support Team USA! These headbands are super quick and easy to make. Not to mention the fact that you can use them again when the 4th of July rolls around. They are interchangeable so you can just pop one off and stick another one on. Your kiddo can’t outgrow it because you can just make a bigger band once it starts getting a little too tight. ;)If I had invested more time in this project, I would have sewn everything to make it more durable. But since this is something she won’t wear often, hot glue did the trick!

I made 3 different headbands and two hair clips {which can also be used on the headband}. And I still had a bunch of stars left over for other projects!

So let’s get to it!

You will need:

  • Felt stars {I got lucky and found a bag of them before I started… no cutting for me!}
  • Velcro
  • Elastic
  • Felt
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue gun

1. Lay out your stars and arrange them so that when they are glued together, there will be enough room for your headband to run down the center. I didn’t use the white ones because they aren’t actually white.2. Flip them over and cut strips of felt to fit down the center. Cut small squares for the single stars.3. Glue the strips down the center making sure they are tight so there are no spaces between the stars. I held them together and put a little glue down the center in sections, and pressed the felt down as I went.

**Please be careful while doing this! I don’t want any of you to burn yourself! As much as I hate to admit it, I’m totally speaking from experience. Yep, I burned my thumb. Not only did I give myself a really pretty blister, but I made sure to burn my other fingers by flipping out and trying to pull the glue off! Panic mode doesn’t work in my favor. Just ask my fingers. Worst. pain. ever. This is where the project ended and the cursing crying started. My glue gun and I had words, but I forgave it the next day and all was well again. Someone should really invent glue gun gloves. Please.4. Glue Velcro dots to each end of your felt on all of your strips. Glue a dot to the center of the felt on your single stars as well. Again, be careful. Pretty please.5. Cut a piece of elastic to fit around your child’s head. I just wrapped a piece around her noggin and cut where the end met the elastic {after removing it from around her head}. That method somehow worked like a charm.

6. Lay a strip of felt {about an inch thick?} under your elastic. Fold the bottom up to the edge of the elastic.
7. Put a little hot glue along the felt.
8. Fold the top over the bottom tightly and slid elastic out.9. Flip it over.
10. Cut off the excess felt.
11. Then cut the tube in half. Hamburger style. 12. Glue Velcro dots {ones that will stick to the dots you used earlier} onto the seams of each tube.13. Slide your elastic back through the tubes. Overlap the elastic ends and glue in place. Slide one tube over that seam to cover it up. Then stick one end of your stars to that tube. Slide the other tube down the elastic to meet the other end of your stars.

If you are making clips too, glue a Velcro dot to the clip and stick a star on it. I didn’t have any clips but I plan to get some soon! For now, we’ll just stick them on the headband.

And you’re done! All that’s left to do now is put it on that cute little head. I just might wear one of the clips, it would probably look stunning on my big ol’ head. But Little Miss would enjoy matching mama no matter how super cool I look! :)

See how many we made? And I’m all ready for next year’s 4th of July celebration too! She looks a little like the Statue of Liberty from certain angles. A much cuter version, of course! :wink: Adorable, yes? Go Team USA!

Baby’s Own Footprint Necklace

Looking for a meaningful gift this Mother’s Day? Well look no further! You can use your baby’s actual footprint to make this extra special gift for grandma! And yourself. I won’t judge. I made myself one too! Okay two. But I couldn’t help it… you can easily make a bunch of these at once so it’s impossible not to make yourself one while you’re at it! And they are so quick to make, it will probably take you longer to read through this tutorial than it will take you to make them! It’s personalized. It’s inexpensive. It’s quick. And it’s easy!DIY Baby's Own Footprint NecklaceThese are made using Shrinky Dinks plastic, which will shrink down to a third of it’s original size and become nine times thicker when it’s baked in an oven. So keep that in mind when you’re deciding how big of a foot you’re willing to wear around your neck! ;) My daughter is actually a toddler now at almost 14-months-old, and her actual print measured about 4 1/4" in length. After it was baked, it shrunk down to almost 1 3/4" in length. Plus a little more for the border. If your little one isn’t so little anymore and you think a necklace might be too big, make a keychain instead!

::Update:: Since writing this post, I’ve seen these made for babies as young as a month old and they are cuuute!DIY Baby's Own Footprint NecklaceThere are so many different options with this project! You can use different plastic {clear, white, or frosted}, different paint colors, and different necklace chains {or key chains}. You can do handprints too!

Here’s how to make one {or two, or three} of your very own!

You will need:

  • Shrinky Dinks- I used Crystal Clear {found in a craft store or online}
  • Necklace chain
  • Jewelry jump rings
  • Non-toxic acrylic craft paint
  • Mod Podge- Gloss
  • 1/8” hole punch- I used the Martha Stewart Screw Punch but any punch should work
  • Jewelry pliers
  • Scissors
  • Brush/sponge/finger

DIY Baby's Own Footprint Necklace

1. Put a layer of non-toxic acrylic craft paint on the bottom of your baby’s foot. Stamp a bunch of prints on a sheet of Shrinky Dinks. We just kept stamping until the prints no longer showed well, and the lighter ones turned out better. The prints will get a lot darker after baking and you can see more detail when there isn’t a lot of paint.

You can also clean up any little smudges with a Q-tip at this point if you need to. Make sure your kiddo doesn’t run off while you’re doing this because she just might rip off her diaper and pee on the floor. Oopsie. :)DIY Baby's Own Footprint Necklace2. Cut out the footprint leaving a small border around the edges. Make sure to round the edges because if you leave any square points, they will be very sharp once you bake it. Also be sure to leave a little more room along the top of the toes so you can punch a hole for the jump ring.DIY Baby's Own Footprint Necklace3. Punch a hole {1/8” size} above the toes at the center of the foot. Don’t forget this step or it’s a fail! You can’t punch the hole after it’s baked.DIY Baby's Own Footprint Necklace4. Now you’re ready to bake! Follow the directions on your Shrinky Dinks package. It doesn’t take long so keep an eye on it! Put your full size print in the oven, and in 1-3 minutes {I didn't actually time it, I just watched it curl up and flatten out again, and then counted to 30 before removing it} you’ll have a tiny plastic version of your baby’s footprint!

*Important* Don’t skip the part of the directions that tell you to press down on the footprint {with folded paper} after baking. If you want your print to be nice and flat, don’t forget this step!DIY Baby's Own Footprint Necklace5. Put a layer of Mod Podge {I used gloss} on your baked plastic to protect the footprint and keep it from scratching. Let it dry.DIY Baby's Own Footprint Necklace6. Almost done! Use your jewelry pliers to open a jump ring and put it through the hole you punched above the toes. Put it on the necklace and close the ring with your pliers.DIY Baby's Own Footprint NecklaceTa-da! DIY Baby's Own Footprint NecklaceNow admire your work and don’t feel bad when you decide to keep it for yourself. Guilty! Make an extra one… just in case. ;)

I love my sweet little footprint necklace and so does my mom and mother-in-law! I know I’ll be making a lot more of these!DIY Baby's Own Footprint Necklace*UPDATE* Here are some tips I want to share with you after answering some comments and emails to hopefully answer some questions you may have. If you still have a question or run into a problem, just leave a comment or send me an email and I’ll be glad to help!

Tips:

  • Use only the materials suggested in the Shrinky Dinks directions for applying your print to the plastic. Others may rub off or smear. Craft paint = good. Ink = bad.
  • Less paint on the foot makes for a lighter print, which will show more detail after baking. The prints will darken after shrinking.
  • Q-tips work great for cleaning up any little smudges before baking.
  • Be sure to round all edges when cutting your footprint out. Any square edges will be very sharp after baking!
  • Resist the urge to pull your footprints out of the oven when they start to curl up and the ends look like they are melting together! I admit, I panicked when I first saw them roll up, but I have yet to have one actually stick together. They will flatten back out if you leave them in the oven a bit longer. Or at least they should {I don’t want you to burn the place down waiting for them!}. I don’t actually time mine, I just sit on the floor and peek in my oven until I see them flatten back out and stop moving. Then I count to 30 and remove them.
  • Your footprint will be flat IF you follow the baking directions properly. You MUST press down on the footprint as it explains in the Shrinky Dinks directions or you take the chance of it turning out a little wavy and not being completely flat.
  • Some have been interested in making these from old baby prints. I have not actually tried it, but have suggested trying Printable Shrinky Dinks. I would try scanning the prints and printing them out on this plastic {while following all the directions on the package} and then following the rest of the steps above. Although you may want to try spray sealant instead of Mod Podge to avoid smearing the ink. If you try it, I would love to know how it turns out or if you have any tips!

I hope you enjoy this necklace! If you make one, please oh please email me a picture or post it on my Facebook page! It makes my heart happy! :)
