Team USA Headband and Hair Clips

Are you enjoying the Olympics as much as I am? Summer is my favorite! And while my little one is too young to get excited about the Olympics, she’s not too young to support Team USA! These headbands are super quick and easy to make. Not to mention the fact that you can use them again when the 4th of July rolls around. They are interchangeable so you can just pop one off and stick another one on. Your kiddo can’t outgrow it because you can just make a bigger band once it starts getting a little too tight. ;)If I had invested more time in this project, I would have sewn everything to make it more durable. But since this is something she won’t wear often, hot glue did the trick!

I made 3 different headbands and two hair clips {which can also be used on the headband}. And I still had a bunch of stars left over for other projects!

So let’s get to it!

You will need:

  • Felt stars {I got lucky and found a bag of them before I started… no cutting for me!}
  • Velcro
  • Elastic
  • Felt
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue gun

1. Lay out your stars and arrange them so that when they are glued together, there will be enough room for your headband to run down the center. I didn’t use the white ones because they aren’t actually white.2. Flip them over and cut strips of felt to fit down the center. Cut small squares for the single stars.3. Glue the strips down the center making sure they are tight so there are no spaces between the stars. I held them together and put a little glue down the center in sections, and pressed the felt down as I went.

**Please be careful while doing this! I don’t want any of you to burn yourself! As much as I hate to admit it, I’m totally speaking from experience. Yep, I burned my thumb. Not only did I give myself a really pretty blister, but I made sure to burn my other fingers by flipping out and trying to pull the glue off! Panic mode doesn’t work in my favor. Just ask my fingers. Worst. pain. ever. This is where the project ended and the cursing crying started. My glue gun and I had words, but I forgave it the next day and all was well again. Someone should really invent glue gun gloves. Please.4. Glue Velcro dots to each end of your felt on all of your strips. Glue a dot to the center of the felt on your single stars as well. Again, be careful. Pretty please.5. Cut a piece of elastic to fit around your child’s head. I just wrapped a piece around her noggin and cut where the end met the elastic {after removing it from around her head}. That method somehow worked like a charm.

6. Lay a strip of felt {about an inch thick?} under your elastic. Fold the bottom up to the edge of the elastic.
7. Put a little hot glue along the felt.
8. Fold the top over the bottom tightly and slid elastic out.9. Flip it over.
10. Cut off the excess felt.
11. Then cut the tube in half. Hamburger style. 12. Glue Velcro dots {ones that will stick to the dots you used earlier} onto the seams of each tube.13. Slide your elastic back through the tubes. Overlap the elastic ends and glue in place. Slide one tube over that seam to cover it up. Then stick one end of your stars to that tube. Slide the other tube down the elastic to meet the other end of your stars.

If you are making clips too, glue a Velcro dot to the clip and stick a star on it. I didn’t have any clips but I plan to get some soon! For now, we’ll just stick them on the headband.

And you’re done! All that’s left to do now is put it on that cute little head. I just might wear one of the clips, it would probably look stunning on my big ol’ head. But Little Miss would enjoy matching mama no matter how super cool I look! :)

See how many we made? And I’m all ready for next year’s 4th of July celebration too! She looks a little like the Statue of Liberty from certain angles. A much cuter version, of course! Adorable, yes? Go Team USA!

4th of July: Patriotic Ice Cube Stars

The 4th of July is quickly approaching and it’s always one of my favorite days of summer! My family gets together for a BBQ every year, but we never do any kind of patriotic-themed decorating. So I thought I was doing pretty good when I bought red, white, and blue serving trays and some matching hot dog baskets for our last gathering. But after I discovered the blogging world, I realized I’m a little behind. OK, I’m a lot behind. So this year, I can’t wait to join in on the fun!!

I found star-shaped silicone molds at Joann the other day. They are a decent size and I actually bought them for a completely different idea that I haven’t gotten around to yet. But I got so excited to use them that I couldn’t wait and came up with another use for them!

Patriotic blueberry and strawberry star shaped ice cubes 4th of July

Patriotic ice cube stars! A fun {and healthy} way to dress up water!

You will need:

Wash your fruit and cut the strawberries into smaller pieces. I didn’t cut up the blueberries but it would help to add flavor if you do. Toss some blueberries and strawberries randomly into your silicone mini star mold.

Now cut some more strawberries into even smaller pieces. And toss some into the little  ice cube tray. Add blueberries to the other half of the tray. Eat the extras.

Fill the stars with water and put the trays in the freezer. Once they’re done, you can remove the frozen stars and stick them in a freezer bag until you’re ready to use them. But do it quickly so they don’t start to melt and stick together!

Since my pitcher is tall and skinny, and I was only making enough for two, I made one tray of each. But you may want to repeat the process if you have more guests, or buy a few trays to save time. And you’re’ done!

These little stars look even cuter in person, the pictures don’t do them justice!

The strawberries flavored the water really quickly and it was so good!! My husband and I decided this will now be a regular summer treat!

Dress up your water with a little red, white {or clear}, and blue! And have a wonderful 4th of July!!

Guest Post: 4th of July Hanging Plaque

I have a lovely guest post for you today, from Lyon Party of 4!! She has a gorgeous blog that covers all the fun topics. Seriously, she covers it all! And I’m so excited to introduce you to her. We are both new to the blogging world, and I am so happy to have her support. I absolutely adore this girl, and you will too! She’s sharing a tutorial with us today that is sure to add another project to your to-do list. I know my list just got longer!!

Hello Hubby Made Me readers! My name is Jen and I am the author over at the blog Lyon Party of 4. As a mother of 2 boys, truly everyday I am praying for at least one dull moment!  I like to blog about pretty much anything, but mainly DIY craft/household projects, recipes, mommy hood, my love for wine, and living the Army wife life.  Some popular featured posts from my blog are, Football Themed Room Makeover, When Duty Calls, Quick Photo Frame Idea and DIY Wine Picture Frames.I am extremely excited and honored that Britni asked me to guest post for her beautiful blog today!  I am so lucky to have met her! She is my new “BBB”(Best Blog Buddy) and I enjoy every conversation we exchange.  She inspires me with her amazing projects and gorgeous photographs.

Today I wanted to share a project that I created for 4th of July, a 4th of July Hanging Plaque.I love decorating for 4th of July and had a lot of fun making this wall plaque.  Not only is this project super easy, its cheap too!Start with a blank piece of wood any size you would like.  I actually got this from Wal-Mart but you can also get one from any craft store. This part depends on the size of wood you purchased, but you measure horizontally and put down Frog Tape to make lines to get ready to paint.Go ahead and paint the each individual lines from Navy blue to ivory. You can use whatever kind of paint you like.  I did the blues first, let them dry then I did the ivory.Next, I had this old metal star laying around, you can actually get one at any craft store.  I painted it with the spray paint & primer mix.  I am a huge fan of spray paint!  I keep tons all different colors for any projects I have. Here in this pic you can see why I painted it white first, so you can still kind of see it under the red paint.  I like the finish of the paint when it dried.  Here I used Acrylic burgundy color.Next, you want to go ahead and staple some hemp rope on the back of the plaque so it can hold.  The size of rope just depends on size of the plaque you use.I purchased this small scrapbook wooden piece from Michaels.  I loved it as soon as I had seen it.  I figured it would add a little something for 4th of July.  I always have Mod Podge laying around, but you want use it to layer of the scrapbook piece. You want to put 2 or 3 layers over it.  It also leaves a glossy finish on the plaque.  If you want your plaque outside, you want to use the Mod Podge Outdoor.Next, you want to trace over the star because you are going to cover the star with a 4th of July pattern of scrapbook paper of your choice.  You can even do all different patters on the star too. After you trace the triangles, cut them out and then layer the star.  You want to first cover the star with Mod Podge, then fit the triangles on the star then cover with another layer of Mod Podge.  When it dries, its then clean and glossy. This part is probably the trickiest part of the whole project.  I had a roll of Burlap and wanted to make a rosette for the top so that the nail doesn’t show when you hang the plaque.  To make the rosette, you want to cute a long piece off of the burlap roll.  Then fold it in half and twist and roll it up at the same time.  Once it is all rolled up, you want to hot glue gun the bottom to hold it together.  The rosette will depend on the size of the plaque.  Last, you want to Hot glue gun the star onto the plaque.  I also wanted to add just a little bit more color, so I found some Red, White & Blue scrap material and ripped a piece off and tied it up top with the rosette. You can also just use it as a plaque without the hemp rope too. There you have it!  I hope you had as much fun creating this as I did!

Thank you so much Britni for having me over today, I am so honored!
