Just a little warning… these are very addicting!It’s nearly impossible to make these without having a few here and there. You know, to make sure they taste ok. Or maybe you have to eat the larger ones, because they’re just too big for your little one. And then there’s the awkwardly shaped ones. I’m not exactly sure why, but I have to eat those too. My thirteen-month-old gets the survivors.
I’ve been trying to find healthier alternatives to store-bought toddler snacks. So I started thinking about the packaged yogurt melts and wondered if I could just freeze my own yogurt. Obviously, there are big differences between the two:
1. You have to make these yourself, which is not as convenient as grabbing a bag at the store.
2. These actually melt. And melt QUICK. There’s no easy traveling with these!
But the most important difference is that you can control the ingredients when you make your own. So I did a quick Pinterest search to find the best way to do this. I came across this post by Tracy, over at shutterbean. She’s written a tutorial with the cutest pictures, so head over there to see how she makes these yummy treats! Continue reading below for a few tips and to find out how to make flavored melts using plain yogurt and fresh or frozen fruit {like the blueberry ones pictured}.
Be sure to keep a stash in your freezer. You’ll go through these fast! I like to use disposable foil pans with lids. My husband picked up a pack-of-two at our local grocery store. He bought the perfect size for our freezer, since all of our actual pans were too wide. They’re nice because the lids not only cover, but allow for easy stacking without any yogurt getting smashed. I line the pans with wax paper, fill both with yogurt using frosting bags {or Ziploc bag}, cover, and freeze them for a few hours. Then you just pop them off and into these Ziploc pint sized freezer bags. They’re the perfect size and sit nicely in the freezer. An added bonus, they’re BPA-free according to their website. If you start making different flavors, the labels on the freezer bags will come in handy.
To make flavored yogurt melts:
1. Puree fruit of your choosing. {Blueberries, strawberries, pears, plums, peaches, etc.}
*Don’t add too much pureed fruit or the yogurt will get too thin and you will end up with big flat blobs. I may, or may not, be speaking from experience! Add a little at a time to keep the consistency you want.
2. Mix puree into plain yogurt and you’re ready to add it to your bag!
If your yogurt seems to be getting thinner as you’re adding melts to your pan, pop it in the fridge for a bit to thicken it up.
{I use my stash of fruit that I pureed and froze for my daughter a while ago.} Easy, right?
My daughter LOVES plain yogurt. But she won’t eat it if I mix in any fruit. Until it’s frozen. Sneaky, sneaky. I’ve also noticed these help with teething. I love anything that makes her feel better when those tiny jerks teeth are coming through.
Homemade yogurt melts make a great treat for any age. It’s fast. It’s easy. And it’s healthy! We use organic whole plain yogurt. Vanilla yogurt is another great option. Try mixing different colors {flavors} in a bowl for older kids!
Are you going to try them out for yourself? Let me know how much you love them!
